Part-Time Highway Staff
Summary. Responsible for performing a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of Town roads, trails and parks. Operate maintenance and construction tools and equipment and perform a variety of maintenance tasks. On call 24 hours per day, seven days per week in case of emergencies.
Scope of Responsibility. The Highway Staff employee is responsible for the servicing the roads, parks and trails with appropriate maintenance practices. The employee is expected to be courteous at all times and represent the Town in a professional and positive manner.
- Assist with various tasks needed to maintain and repair Town roads, parks, trails and facilities.
- Assist in snow removal and ice control, erection and maintenance of traffic control devices and barriers.
- Assist in maintenance of Town parks, trails and paths.
- Utilize all safety standards and regulations and assure compliance with state and federal safety and labor regulations (i.e., OSHA, DOT, etc.).
- Ensure that adequate shop materials, supplies and equipment are available as needed and maintained.
- Maintain Town roads, patch holes, and service roads with appropriate maintenance practices. Check and replace or repair damaged and/or missing road signs.
- Maintain shoulders, mow grass, cut brush, trim or remove trees, remove trash and any related task involved in road maintenance.
- Perform other duties as necessary and as requested, such as maintaining Town buildings and grounds.
- Sufficient communication skills to be able to write, read, and speak correctly to interpret written information, policies, and rules.
- Service and make repairs and adjustments to equipment. Perform manual labor.
- Lift moderately heavy (50 pound) objects on a regular basis and heavier objects on an occasional basis.
- Sit and/or stand for up to eight consecutive hours per work shift with periodic breaks. Walk up to two miles on ungraded and unpaved surfaces per work shift.
- Operate equipment including truck, loader, excavator, grader, tractor mower, chipper, chain saw, and similar equipment of comparable size and complexity.
Prerequisites and Qualifications.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two years’ experience of heavy equipment experience.
- Acceptable driving record as approved by the Board. A valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License.
- Availability nights weekends, and holidays for removal of snow and ice, remove obstructions from roadways or other emergencies.
- Experience and/or training in road maintenance and construction work which includes operating intermediate size motorized equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations as they apply to motorized construction and maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of asphalt and gravel roads.
- Knowledge and ability to operate intermediate size motorized construction maintenance equipment, chain saws, and similar tools and equipment.
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be moderate to loud.
